America in the Twenties and Thirties: The Olympian Age of Franklin Delano Roosevelt $0.99 In this, the third volume of an interdisciplinary history of the United States since the Civil War, Sean Dennis Cashman provides a comprehensive review of politics and economics from the tawdry affluence of the 1920s throught the searing tragedy of the Great Depression to the achievements of the New Deal in providing millions with relief, job opportunities, and hope before America was poised for its ascent to globalism on the eve of World War II. The book concludes with an account of the sliding path to war as Europe and Asia became prey to the ambitions of Hitler and military opportunists in Japan. The book also surveys the creative achievements of America’s lost generation of artists, writers, and intellectuals; continuing innovations in transportation and communications wrought by automobiles and airplanes, radio and motion pictures; the experiences of black Americans, labor, and America’s different classes and ethnic groups; and the tragicomedy of national prohibition. The cast of characters includes FDR, the New Dealers, Eleanor Roosevelt, George W. Norris, William E. Borah, Huey Long, Henry Ford, Clarence Darrow, Ernest Hemingway, Scott Fitzgerald, W.E.B. DuBois, A. Philip Randolph, Orson Welles, Wendell Willkie, and the stars of radio and the silver screen. The first book in this series, America in the Gilded Age, is now accounted a classic for historiographical synthesis and stylisic polish. America in the Age of the Titans, covering the Progressive Era and World War I, and America in the Twenties and Thirties reveal the author’s unerring grasp of various primary and secondary sources and his emphasis upon structures, individuals, and anecdotes about them. The book is lavishly illustrated with various prints, photographs, and reproductions from the Library of Congress, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. |

Andy Warhol Portraits $44.95 To the mainstream masses, Andy Warhol is known as the painter of legendary icons, from multi-colored Marilyns to Chairman Mao. With his gaunt face and wiry-platinum hair, his self-portraits are perhaps the most instantly recognizable in all of modern art. Less known, however, are the portraits Warhol created of socialites, art dealers, collectors, politicians, fashion designers and a variety of contemporary cult figures, mostly commissioned work that helped finance Warhol’s other artistic endeavors. Andy Warhol Portraits by Tony Shafrazi, is the first book to provide a complete overview of Warhol’s many celebrity portraits, from the famous to the infamous. Never before has there been a book that provides such a comprehensive overview of all of Warhol’s painted portraits. The book features over 300 glamorous portraits including many works largely unknown even by avid fans. Andy Warhol Portraits grew out of an exhibition organized by the Tony Shafrazi Gallery, in New York of 2005. The book includes, in addition to famous portraits of Marlon Brando, Liz Taylor and Dennis Hopper, lesser-known images of actors Bill Murray and Meryl Streep, fellow artists Donald Judd and Cy Twombly and royal family members such as Princess Diana and Princess Caroline. The book also features a number of musicians, including Prince and Dolly Parton, and fashion icons such as Diane von Furstenberg and Giorgio Armani. The book begins with an introduction by Tony Shafrazi, and features essays by established art historians/critics Carter Ratcliff and Robert Rosenblum, who lend insight into Warhol’s endlessly fascinating career. Warhol’s life and influence on pop culture and the art world today is undeniable, making this collection of famous faces an important facet of contemporary art. |

Chapters: Art Galleries in New York City, Associated American Artists, Chambers Fine Art, Yvon Lambert Gallery, Zabriskie Gallery, Rochester Contemporary Art Center, Big Orbit Gallery, Elaine Benson Gallery. Excerpt: Associated American Artists is an art gallery and business established in 1934 in New York City. The gallery marketed art to the middle classes, first in the form of affordable prints and later in home furnishings and accessories, and played a significant role in the growth of art as an industry. Associated American Artists was begun by Reeves Lewenthal. Lewenthal’s first job was as a reporter for the Chicago Tribune but he quickly expanded into artists’ agent, working as a publicist for British artist Douglas Chandor. By the 1930s Lewenthal had a clientele of 35 groups including the National Academy of Design and the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design. Realizing the limited possibilities in selling high-priced art to high-class dealers, and the correspondingly huge potential in marketing affordable art to the much-larger middle classes, he left his public relations work to try his hand at this new business model. Prints being relatively cheap to produce, Lewenthal decided to focus on that medium. Before the 1930s, fine-art prints were usually limited editions which sold for $10-$50. During the Great Depression the Federal Art Project had resulted in hundreds of thousands of prints, but these were distributed free (mostly to schools) thus the artists made nothing. Lewenthal’s idea was to combine quality, affordability, and profit. In 1934 he met with several well-known American artists, including Thomas Hart Benton, and proposed hiring them to produce etchings which he would then sell to middle-class buyers for $5 apiece plus $2 per frame, … More: |

Commodifying culture in the global city: Spatial practices and symbolic boundaries of contemporary art in Beijing. $49.99 Over the decades of the nineties, contemporary art in Beijing has been transformed from an avant-garde underground into a booming culture industry vital to the capital city's rebranding as a global city in the 21st century. Articulating this commodification of art are both new market forces and cultural, social, and political values that have radically altered the spatial practices of the creation and showing of art works and created new symbolic boundaries between artists and their audience and patrons. These fundamental institutional shifts from a socialist to a capitalist market system, however, have not followed a linear course of action, but have instead traced a path of significant ambiguity, disorder and ideological contradictions. Central to the complexity are changing relationships between the Party-state to the art world. Three case studies, one focusing on artistic censorship in a commercial gallery, one examining property rights conflicts over artists' studios, and one looking at recent trends in global art auctions, demonstrate how conflict over the autonomy of art and artists have led the Party-state to move away from a model of direct supervision towards an approach that is based on selective intervention in an environment where content is defined primarily by market forces. Focused on the processes by which artists, dealers, collectors, and state actors have, at times intentionally and at other times unwittingly, redefined and commodified contemporary art within a dominant nationalist discourse of consumerism and private market growth, this thesis demonstrates how state officials' endorsements of contemporary art as a valuable component of the culture industry has complemented artists' participation in lucrative entrepreneurial activities to generate an explosive growth of profitable new locations of contemporary art production and consumption. |
